Embracing Ephemeral and In.Visible exhibitions

When words fail, art speaks, transcending barriers of language and culture, reminding us of our common humanity.

I am looking forward to installing and exhibiting “Embracing Ephemeral,” our duo show with an amazing painter and my friend Alex Leith. This exhibition will showcase our shared fascination with the delicate balance between the fleeting and the eternal. Among our individual new work, we’ll be also showing our collaborative pieces, where we delve into the mystical world of Dryads, tree spirits with finite lives, juxtaposing their ephemeral existence with the everlasting beauty of nature. Our artworks will invite viewers to contemplate the fragile yet resilient nature of all living beings.

Join us at the Millspace Gallery in Newmarket for this transformative journey through the realms of clay and glass sculptures and energy-filled painted landscapes.

Exhibition Dates: September 30 – November 4, 2023
Opening Reception: September 30, 6-8pm
Millspace Gallery, 55 Main St, River Level, Newmarket, NH

Searching for Answers
stoneware, stains, glazes, 34x12x11 inches, 2023

I just shipped my sculpture “Searching for Answers” to the invitational exhibition titled In.Visible at The Bascom Center for the Visual Arts in North Carolina. I am thrilled this piece will be shown among other incredible artists’ work.

Curated by ceramic artist, Kirsten Stingle, In.Visible explores reimagining myths and tales to better address the climate crisis as well as the social, economic, and political upheaval of modernity. David Abram says, “Before you can restore the land, you must re-story the land.”

This sculpture is another version of my “Where Did Our God Go?” piece. Since the previous one was chosen for another show, I had to make a new one for this invitational exhibition. It is challenging to repeat the same idea and forms, but interesting to see how it usually evolves and never looks exactly the same. This sculpture is a symbol of resilience, an embodiment of the universal human desire for meaning and connection. It tells a story of loss, faith, and the search for divine guidance amidst the chaos of war. With this sculpture I hope to remind us of the enduring power of faith and the quest for answers in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Exhibition Dates: September 30 – December 30
Opening Reception: October 5, 5pm

I am thrilled this sculpture will be on display at the Figure exhibition in California. It is truly a privilege to have my work shown at the Epperson Gallery and be selected by Michelle Gregor. The timing of its creation also gives me shivers, as I started the sculpture in December of 2021 and finished it in January of 2022, just before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

For the month of February I ran a fundraiser to support the young artists of the Aza Nizi Maza art school in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Please consider donating to this worthy cause and help support the next generation of artists! Your contribution will go towards providing resources and education for these young artists. This incredible school is in its 10th year and had more than 60 exhibitions. At the beginning of the war, it was a bomb shelter. Since then, the students at Aza Nizi Maza continue to use their talents to give voice to the struggles and experiences of Ukraine. I believe that investing in future generations is crucial. Together, we can make a difference and help these committed students continue to create and reach their full potential during these challenging times!

Last post of 2022

Three days left before the new year. It has been 10 months since Russian forces invaded my native Ukraine. My mornings start with news from there and conversations with my cousin who still lives in Kiev. There have been so many atrocities and so many lives lost. My biggest wish for the next year is Peace in my motherland and all over the world!

Ganesha for Ukraine
stoneware, stains, glazes, glass, 14x11x10 inches

I am so grateful to show my work with an amazing group of the ceramic artists in the invitation exhibition titled Thinking with Animals at the Canton Museum of Art

Before the war began in my motherland, Ukraine, I was working on a series called the Cloud Dwellers. Hybrids of past and future deities, these serene figures inhabited ephemeral mists, untouched by the hassles and frenzy of our everyday, earthly concerns. Then the war started and my sculptures became punctured with holes as if they too got shelled by bombs and false propaganda. The sky was no longer a safe refuge but a source of danger and uncertainty.

When I was invited to participate in the Thinking With Animals exhibition, I immediately thought of Ganesha as a remover of the obstacles. Growing up, I loved reading Indian mythology stories – Ukraine is geographically positioned between the East and the West and I was lucky to have a stream of international folklore and ideas flowing through our house during my childhood. I learned from a young age that the elephant is a symbol of good luck. In this piece, his blue body is juxtaposed by a yellow dome and drapes to reflect the colors of the Ukrainian flag. In his right hand he holds a globe partly covered in ashes while an all-seeing eye appears on his left palm predicting the victory for Ukraine.

Exhibition runs: 11/25/2022–03/05/2023

All I want is Peace
stoneware, stains, glazes, 14x19x9 inches

I am happy to report that I recently became a core member of Fountain Street Gallery in BOSTON, MA. Two of my sculptures from the Broken Dreams series are included at Form and Emptiness exhibition. This show is an exploration of contrasts and juxtapositions featuring the work of the gallery’s Core Members. Artists start with a blank slate and an idea, question, or impulse, and, through their creative processes, form emerges. Something wholly new, and often unexpected, may come into being. Disparate elements—color, value, size, texture, meaning and medium— ultimately relate through their interdependence in a completed work of art. Without emptiness, there would be no form. Fountain Street artists celebrate the duality of this push and pull to express their numerous and expansive artistic visions.

Exhibition runs: 12/1/2022–1/15/2023

Celestial Song
stoneware, stains, glazes, 16x12x8 inches

Two of my sculptures were included at the Colors of Peace, a pop-up exhibition that took place at the Wedeman Gallery. This was a fundraiser art exhibition in support of children with autism in Ukraine. Autistic children, who are among almost 5 million displaced Ukrainian children, have been and continue to be hit particularly hard during this brutal war. In collaboration with Heal Ukraine Group, the Autism Unity’s non-profit organization, immediate mission is to providing access to the specialists and quality programs for displaced children of Ukraine with autism spectrum and their families. The loss of educational and therapeutic supports combined with war stressors are catastrophic to the autistic people, resulting in a mental health crisis for the children and parents. Many of them forced to leave everything behind: their homes, their schools, and often, their family members.

NPR interview and more!

I am happy to announce that my solo exhibition On Another Shore is currently at Millspace gallery in Newmarket, NH — thank you to everyone who made it to the opening! Also, NPR interviewed me and you can listen here:
For many of us, 2020 was a tumultuous time. For me, it marked a big change; I moved from California to the other shore of the East Coast. This move generated a series of mythological forest creatures inspired by the New England wildlife. These archetypes were serene, mysterious beings viewing imminent changes as a path for future spiritual growth. My work shifted dramatically since Russia invaded my motherland Ukraine. My sculptures became punctured with holes as if they got shelled by bombs and propaganda. The surfaces are now covered with crawling glazes reminiscent of ashes. Drawing with negative space, I am letting light penetrate the openings and orifices. Each of these sculptures reflect a particular moment of this war. We are in an unprecedented moment. It seems we still have more of these excruciating trials to go through before approaching the age of peace and creativity. As an eternal optimist I believe deeply in the goodness of people everywhere. We are the Earth’s consciousness and it is up to us to steer ourselves into a bright future!

Heal Yourself With Art!

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.
— Helen Keller

From Whispering to Screaming exhibition reflects the latest transformations in our lives. During the pandemic we moved to the woods of the East Coast. This move inspired a series of mythological creatures who live on top of tall trees and see the imminent changes on the horizon as opportunities for future spiritual growth. Then, on the 24th of February, Russia brutally invaded my motherland and my work shifted dramatically. My sculptures became punctured with holes, as if they too got shelled by bombs and propaganda. I am glued to the news and speak to my family in Kiev every day.

We are in the moment of an unimaginable future. It seems we still have more of these excruciating experiences to go through before approaching the age of peace and creativity. Listen Europe is about a shared geographic and cultural experience, speaking to Ukraine’s position between Russia and the rest of Europe. The piece is also about the endless talks, negotiations, rumors and bureaucracy ensnaring us into passivity. The two figures share another connection by the tumultuous dark blue cloud lurking on top of their heads; the menace of totalitarian regimes that threatens many parts of the world, including Europe. This piece has been juried into the Summer Surprise! exhibition at LexArt.

We have to press on: upcoming artist talks and workshops

Like for so many, the past two months were very emotionally draining and tumultuous for me. Nevertheless, listening to the news every day, I produced a whole new series of work about war called Broken Dreams, reflecting on the current situation in my native Ukraine. It was strengthening to share the images and stories behind these pieces during SculptSlam, a presentation organized by the New England Sculptors Association,  held over zoom on May 10th. I presented my work along with Roe Osborn, Sabrina Fadia and Domenic Esposito. You can watch the talk on youtube here: https://youtu.be/rxWZI732JU8?t=988

Expressive Hands and Faces will take place at the Beatrice Wood art Center in Ojai, June 4 and 5, 10-4pm. This workshop will cover hand-building techniques of the most expressive features on the human body – faces and hands. Students will learn about the anatomical structure of the face to help accurately portray facial features and expressive qualities. Different methods of sculpting emotions will be demonstrated during the workshop. While also learning about the structure of the hands, we will explore the gestural aspect and symbolism of the position of the fingers in different cultures. Step-by-step instructions will explain everything from creating basic rough outlines to refining the surface for finely detailed elements. Works will be fired and available for pick up at a later date. All levels are welcome – I am looking forward to meeting new fellow artists and to reconnecting with my previous students!

Sculpted Dreams will be happening at the Epperson Gallery in Crockett.

Schedule: June 11 and June 12, 2022.  10am to 4pm.

At this Bay Area workshop, I’ll be sharing my process of forming otherworldly beings combining mythology, contemporary elements and imagination into a sculptural ceramic object. During the first day I will demonstrate different clay hand-building techniques. On the second day, the main focus will be on surface treatments. The ceramic surface will be approached as a canvas, using slips, underglazes and the sgraffito technique to create vibrant, dynamic surfaces of visual storytelling. Participants will also have the ability to practice post-glaze techniques such as china painting. For this purpose, students are encouraged to bring bisque-ware to experiment on. All levels are welcome!

Each student will receive a 25 lb bag of clay. Bisque firing is included.

I am so grateful for all these opportunities to present my work and to teach the techniques I have learned throughout the years of working with my favorite material – clay. I pray we’ll celebrate the victory of my native Ukraine by this summer.

Tough Times Updates

Since the 24th of February, our world turned upside down – Russia brutally invaded my motherland! My work has begun to reflect this violent change: the faces are no longer serene but anguished, the figures full of holes, as if broken by shelling.

I am trying to make sense of this war by seeing it from different points of view, revisiting Russia’s long and bloody history. I had to memorize over 1000 years of endless cruelty and predatory wars in my soviet-era grade school, which I then promptly forgot–now I review the atrocities in this new context. I am glued to the news and speak to my cousin in Kiev everyday. There is a little progress, if you could call it a progress, made towards the end of this war. But how many more lives will have to be sacrificed before it is over? We are a global community–I hope the world-leading countries will step up to stop the Russian army terror.

I thought we had been entering the age of Aquarius, the era of a new creative Renaissance. But it seems we still have more of these excruciating experiences to go through before entering the age of peace and creativity. As an eternal optimist I believe deeply in the goodness of people everywhere. We are the Earth’s consciousness and it is up to us to steer the future in the proper direction!

Our fundraiser reached the $10,000 mark mid-March.  The gallery artists are donating all proceeds from this exhibit to World Central Kitchen wck.org and I am donating my sculpture “Uncertain Moment” from the Shell Dweller series. This creature finds sanctuary in the safe home of a shell. Awaiting for rescue from her brothers, she contemplates when it will be safe to crawl out. Let’s be hopeful that after this war, peace will prevail!

2022 has kicked off with the Lover’s Eye invitational exhibition at Pence Gallery. I love their poetic theme and I am excited to have one of my blown-glass-and-ceramic sculptures included in the show.

Lover’s eyes, or eye miniatures, were popular in Great Britain from the late 1700s through the Victorian era. Typically painted on a small piece of ivory, an eye miniature depicts a single eye, representing the gaze of a loved one. Thought to have been originally created as a secret token of love, these mysterious portraits were often worn as jewelry. Thousands survive today, but for the most part, their subjects and the artists who created them are unknown.

The local and regional artists in this exhibit have uniquely explored the lover’s eye theme in various ways. Stellar participating artists include Steven Levin, Adam Forfang, Chris Leib, Kirstine Hansen, Natasha Dikareva, and Laurelin Gilmore, among others.

Exhibition runs: January 7 – January 30, 2022
Reception: January 14, 6-9 PM

Fall Updates

Happy to have my work selected for the So Real-Surreal online show! https://www.ohanloncenter.org/2021/11/surreal-so-real/

From the press release:
“It appears we are living in surrealistic times. The Surrealist Manifesto of André Breton was published almost 100 years ago, and the Dadaists were turning the world upside down to see how it looked. Now it is time to express a 2.0 version that speaks to our world of post fact, post rational, and multiple “realities.” The artists in this show share their dreams, hallucinations, fanciful imaginings, and unconscious through their uniquely “distorted” and “bizarre” lens.”

Sirin, my first piece created in our new home town of Newmarket, NH, is at the “Forward, Anew” Millspace Gallery along with some of my other sculptures. This piece was inspired by my daily walks in the forest and by the mythological creature of Russian legends. This half-woman half-bird hybrid creature embodies world harmony, as she lives near paradise. According to the legend, only happy people could hear a Sirin while only very few could see one because she is as fast and difficult to catch as human happiness. I hope we can all catch glimpses of her more often these days.

Foursquared exhibition in San Francisco was very successful and inspired me to create more wall narrative pieces. This one started with the swan, then a happy Buddha face appeared instead of swan head. While I was listening about history of armor a knight helmet landed. He holds an old fashioned pen to write the poem about new beginnings.

In September, two of my sculptures are in the show Honoring, an Attleboro Arts Museum Invitational Exhibition Inspired by Joy Harjo’s An American Sunrise poem.

I dedicated both of my sculptures to the nurses. “How much can you take?” draws on the idea of bodily knowledge of how to heal oneself. The pockets surrounding the figure hold many different kinds of knowledge and experiences which nurses accumulate over time. The figure holds the pearl of wisdom–good caregivers see the unique individual in each patient and know how to inspire them to heal themselves.

Exhibition runs: September 18 – September 25, 2021
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 18, 2-4pm
Admission and parking are free.

Kindly RSVP by Friday, September 17:

How Much Can You Take?

Another piece has found a new home in Manchester, New Hampshire. It was shown for less than a month at the Seacoast Artist Association gallery. I am happy to see my work being appreciated here.

I am enjoying our lush forest environment on the East Coast and spending a lot of time learning about new plants and mushrooms. The palette of my new work is slowly developing into more greens and earthy colors and new shapes appear as I spend more time foraging in the forest. We live in a perfect place for introspection.

Wishing you inner peace and creativity!
